Reliability Vs Validity In Research

In terms of organizations I work with, I’ll provide a specific example from a cardiac catheterization lab that was unreliable on an everyday issue, getting patient histories and physicals before catheterization. Even if they miss only 10% of the time, that is a lot of patients for whom they do not have all the details. And then they said “When we do miss, let us make sure we huddle right away. ” Because often, people were actually saying, “we need to get the patient’s history first.” But they just were not being listened to. So there was a lack of deference to expertise like we talk about in high reliability. After this intentional approach to using high reliability principles and a set of related questions and being systematic about attention to detail, internal quality improvement data showed improvements in obtaining histories and physicals.

This illustrates how transient context interference disrupts working memory and undermines the reliability of structured information tracking over dialogue turns. The date slot is consistently weakest, reflecting difficulty in temporal tracking. Change in mind conversations are most error-prone (85%), while multiple mention cases are relatively robust (91%). Conversational distractions such as temporal shifts or irrelevant chatter differentially impact reliability in realistic reservation tasks. Similarly, we don’t want consultants coming in and just saying that a hospital or system is highly reliable, especially when in daily function nothing is different except we are using different words.

ArXiv is committed to these values and only works with partners that adhere to them. Purpose-built AI with trusted insights for every healthcare sector. Throughout the event, we also had the chance to talk with attendees about some of the work we’ve been doing around VibeMT™, an upcoming addition to MAINTelligence™ that’s currently in development. Sharing a bit about where things are headed next for DMSI added another layer of excitement to the event for our team. The conference floor had a unique rhythm throughout the day, especially with the event’s format centred around three main industry keynote sessions. As those presentations and technical talks wrapped up, waves of attendees would suddenly pour back onto the trade show floor, bringing a noticeable surge of energy and conversation around the booth each time.

In this session we’ll be taking participants through a “self-assessment” of their current maintenance practices. What we’ve observed is that maintenance typically directly controls only about 10% of most losses from ideal production, and at most 30%. That said, excellence in maintenance practices is essential for a reliable plant. Many people in plants feel powerless to take action, lamenting poor design, management support, lack of tools and training, etc. As someone said, it’s easier to get forgiveness than permission. So, with that in mind, we’ll discuss things that anyone can do, given they’ve had some experience in working in their plants.

When that leader left, the culture reverted completely back to a much more traditional approach where everybody stays in their lane, stays in their role, and the members of the unit are not talking as much. A big part of the high reliability mindset is the nature of the talk, the openness, the vulnerability, and the active listening. With the departure of that leader, all that went away, and the unit went right back to what they were before, an underperforming pediatric intensive care unit. So that is some of the fragility there, and the importance of leadership, of setting the tone, instilling practices, normalizing the right kinds of conversations, infusing the right kind of language which are consistent with the principles of high reliability organizations.

In 2016, The Conversation’s FactCheck unit became the first fact-checking team in Australia and one of only two worldwide accredited by the International Fact-Checking Network, an alliance of fact-checkers hosted at the Poynter Institute in the U.S. Founded in 2010, The Conversation is an independent, not-for-profit media outlet. Academics, edited by professional journalists author articles, and freely available online and for republication through a creative commons license. The Australian website launched in March 2011, and has expanded into editions in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2013, United States (U.S.) in 2014, Africa in 2015, France in 2015, Canada in 2017, Indonesia in 2017, Spain in 2018 and Europe and Brazil in the 2020s.

If you missed us at The Reliability Conference 2026, we’ll be attending more industry events throughout the year. You can also book a demo with our team to learn more about how MAINTelligence™, WorkMT™, and InspectMT™ support maintenance and reliability teams. The team considers a variety of factors when rating content.

To understand the causes of reliability degradation, we analyze results by conversation length, task complexity, and entity extraction scenario type (see Appendix for full tables).

What Makes Authenticx Accurate And Reliable?

The most common mistakes in unsatisfying conversational attempts are one member’s talking too much, getting too personal too quickly, and/or ignoring the fact that the other person is disinterested. Pursuing a one-sided conversation by adding too many details is likely to be boring to the listener. And not pausing to let the other person into the conversation is discourteous. The quiet member is often resentful about the speaker’s usurping the attentional space but is uncomfortable in saying so. Often, the quiet member is eager to leave the scene and makes up some excuse for ending the conversation.

Note that even if you have an account, you can still choose to submit an innovation as a guest. Understanding how to access the right dimension for a situation is the art of conversations. There are three levels of conversations, each representing a way of interacting with others. There is a resonant field that builds around one who consistently delivers on their commitments and promises. It is a solemn vow that a Visionmaker makes to the integrity of his or her blood.

  • The amygdala may be here to protect us, but it becomes overactive when faced with chronic stress.
  • In this session we’ll be taking participants through a “self-assessment” of their current maintenance practices.
  • He also recommended newer statistics, such as McDonald’s omega, when alpha’s assumptions do not hold.

Amy Wilson, Kelly Randall, Mary Sitterding, and I have explored the question, “Who is contributing to highly reliable performance? ” COVID was a useful test case because all the “non-essential” people were sent home—the chaplains, the social workers, and the family members.5 We think they were underappreciated components of the safety system. They might get different information and information that could otherwise be missed. They might be able to get those weak signals like if I see my loved one, they just seem a little off today, and I communicate that, that seeming a bit off might get picked up by a chaplain or family member, when it might otherwise be missed entirely.

Many of the conversations from day one continued into the second day, especially around maintenance visibility, inspections, downtime reduction, and the challenge of organizing reliability data in a way that maintenance teams can realistically manage. Empirical studies show that large language models (LLMs) often struggle under such conditions. Multi-turn analyses reveal substantial degradation in reliability compared to single-turn prompts (Laban et al. 2025), while long-context evaluations expose weaknesses such as the “lost in the middle” effect (Liu et al. 2023). This leaves open the question of how to objectively evaluate concrete behaviors required in practice. The researchers say that AI developers should put much more emphasis on reliability in multi-turn conversations.

Accuracy & Reliability

Representative qualitative examples (see Appendix for full results) illustrate the characteristic failure modes in multi-turn settings. These cases reveal how long, information-heavy prompts, topic shifts, and misleading mentions break conversational consistency and gradually erode task reliability. In this session we’ll be taking participants through a “self-assessment” of their design and capital projects practices with a particular focus on designing for plant reliability. What we’ve observed is that most organizations do not use a life cycle cost approach in their capital projects, but rather lowest installed cost. This results in lower reliability, and generally poorer performance.

reliability in conversations

We need to be fully engaged and attentive to the nonverbal cues of the other person. We need to notice whether the other person is involved in the conversation and when to interject our own story or perspective. As with all skills, it requires lots of practice and observational data about how it’s going, that is, when it’s going well or instead grinding to a halt and in need of radical repair.

The Conversation is rated Least biased with Very High factual reporting by Media Bias Fact Check. There seems to be a communication breakdown beyond the misunderstandings around MTBF.

If you enjoyed this article consider subscribing to the ongoing series at Accendo Reliability. People often wonder whether conversations, especially with strangers, are worth the risk. Because the world at large often feels threatening, we ensconce ourselves in little bubbles of connection that have a limited variety of contacts. We talk mainly to familiar types–people who resemble us in appearance, Youmetalks rating on productreview.com.au cultural background, and values, thereby depriving ourselves of the challenges that come with very different experiences.

Just as with suppliers, we need to use the four elements of a complete reliability statement when discussing reliability with our customers. Furthermore, asking what product failure means to them – i.e. what is the impact of our product failing? Ask about importance, reliance, trustworthiness, and related facets of reliability.
